• Drive Cautiously - Endangered Birds on Roadway

  Alert, Severity, information, Drive Cautiously - Endangered Birds on RoadwayNēnē (Hawaiian geese) and ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) are nesting in the park and may land on or frequent park roads, parking lots, and road leading up to the park. Drivers are reminded to drive at the posted speed limits and exercise caution.

Park Status

The Pools of ʻOheʻo in the Kīpahulu District are not accessible for swimming. The pools can be viewed safely from the Kūloa Point Trail.

Staying overnight within Haleakalā National Park is only allowed in a designated camping area. Reservations can be made at Hosmer Grove Campground in the summit district or in Kīpahulu Campground in the coastal district. Staying overnight or sleeping within a vehicle outside of a campground is prohibited.

Open:

• The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park from the entrance to the summit at 10,023 feet is always open with Haleakalā Sunrise Reservations required from 3 am to 7 am HST.
• Sunrise reservations allow access to the Summit District from 3 am to 7 am. Sunrise reservations are available on Recreation.gov up to 60 days in advance. The cost for a sunrise viewing reservation is $1.00 per vehicle. Sunrise reservations must be made prior to visiting the park and can only be obtained online through Recreation.gov. For questions about reservations, call the recreation.gov hotline at 1-877-444-6777. A separate entrance fee will be collected upon entry to the park. Visitors with National Park Passes should have their pass and ID ready to present at the gate for entry. Visitors without a sunrise reservation will not be admitted to the park and no reservations will be issued at the entrance station.
• Reservations can be made for Hosmer Grove Campground in the Summit District online only.
• To stay in Kῑpahulu Campground, campers must utilize the new online reservation system on Recreation.gov. Reservations are available on a rolling 30 day window. For more information visit the Kīpahulu Campground page.
• Primitive tent campgrounds in Haleakalā Crater, Palikū and Hōlua campsites are available by reservation only via Recreation.gov. For more information visit: Wilderness Camping
