Overview

The Haleakalā National Park Archive is located at the Summit District of the park. The park archive contains approximately 70 linear feet of National Park Service images, records, maps, plans, and drawings, and personal papers. The archive serves to document the people, places, and events in and around the park. For more information on individual collections see the Finding Aids (below). Finding Aids

Haleakalā National Park creates finding aids for collections that are fully processed and catalogued. The finding aids provide descriptions of information and types of materials found in each individual collection. New finding aids will be added as collections are processed.

Photograph Collection

  • Historic Photograph Collection, 1910-1991 (HALE 9098)
    This collection contains photographs pertaining to Haleakalā National Park. Materials include black-and-white and color photographs. Photographs detail natural and cultural resources, people, and land use at Haleakalā National Park and tell the story of the park since its inception. The collection dates from 1910 to 1991. The bulk of the material dates from 1931 to 1991.

  • Aerial Photograph Collection, 1953-2004 (HALE 9099)
    This collection contains aerial photographs pertaining to Haleakalā National Park. Materials include black-and-white and color photographs. Photographs detail natural and cultural resources and land use at Haleakalā National Park and tell the story of the park since its inception. The collection dates from 1953 to 2004. Some of the material is undated. The bulk of the material dates from 1965 to 1993.

  • Haleakalā National Park Photograph Collection, 1924-2005 (HALE 9100)
    This collection contains photographs pertaining to Haleakalā National Park. Materials include black-and-white and color photographs. Photographs detail natural and cultural resources, people, and land use at Haleakalā National Park and tell the story of the park since its inception. The collection dates from 1924 to 2005. Some of the material is undated. The bulk of the material dates from 1935 to 1997.

  • Natural Resource Records, 1935-2018 (HALE 9092)
    This collection contains records pertaining to natural resource management at Haleakalā National Park. Materials include reports, agreements, logs, field notes, news articles, correspondence, maps, drawings, and photographs. These records serve as an administrative record of the natural resource management activities conducted at Haleakalā National Park. The collection dates from 1935 to 2018. Some of the material is undated. The bulk of the material dates from 1962 to 2011. Note: While this collection is open to the public, sensitive materials have been flagged and require appropriate permission through the Haleakalā curator to access.

  • Visitor and Resource Protection Records, 1931-2008 (HALE 9094)
    This collection contains records pertaining to visitor and resource protection at Haleakalā National Park. Materials include correspondence, news articles, field reports, timelines, maps, and drawings. These records serve as an administrative record of visitor and resource protection activities conducted at Haleakalā National Park. The collection dates from 1931 to 2008. Some of the material is undated. The bulk of the material dates from 1980 to 1999. Records are kept as they relate to the natural and cultural resources in the park. All other records are preserved by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

  • Interpretation, Education, and Volunteer Records, 1932-2006 (HALE 9095)
    This collection contains records pertaining to interpretation, education, and volunteers at Haleakalā National Park. Materials include reports and correspondence. These records serve as an administrative record of the interpretation, education, and volunteer activities conducted at Haleakalā National Park. The collection dates from 1932 to 2006. Records are kept as they relate to the natural and cultural resources in the park. All other records are preserved by the NARA.

  • Facilities Management Records, 1911-2017 (HALE 9096)
    This collection contains records pertaining to facilities management at Haleakalā National Park. Materials include building project reports, road project reports, trail project reports, guardrail project reports, sign project reports, utility project reports, correspondence, drawings, and photographs. These records serve as an administrative record of facilities management activities conducted at Haleakalā National Park. The collection dates from 1911 to 2017. Some of the material is undated. The bulk of the material dates from 1950 to 2000. Records are kept as they relate to the natural and cultural resources in the park. All other records are preserved by the NARA.

  • Haleakala National Park Maps, Plans, and Drawings, 1869-2021 (HALE 9097)
    This collection contains the maps, plans, and drawings created for Haleakalā National Park. Materials include topographic maps, quadrangles, archeological base maps, trail maps, blueprints, construction plans, utility drawings, boundary maps, site plans, and land parcel maps. These records serve as an administrative record of the maps, plans, and drawings created for Haleakalā National Park. The collection dates from 1869 to 2021. Some of the material is undated. The bulk of the material dates from 1930 to 2000.

Access to the Collection

The collection is available for research and educational purposes; however, since preservation of the collection is of primary concern, access is regulated. Access to the collections may be denied if the requested use is determined not to be in the interest of the collection, Haleakalā National Park or the National Park Service. Access to the collection is by appointment from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (except on Federal holidays) and will be dependent upon an individual's needs and availability of staff. If requesting access to the collection, please contact Park Museum Curator (katie_matthew@nps.gov) or call (808) 572-4476 a minimum of two weeks before you wish to visit.

Donations

If you are interested in donating an object or archives to the museum collection, please send an email to the museum curator. In your email, please include whatever background information you have about your object, with images, if possible. The information you provide will help the Collections Advisory Committee make a final decision regarding the potential acquisition of the donation and will increase the research value if the item(s) are accepted into the collections.
