Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive

Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive is 12 miles of paved, but steep and winding road. The average grade is 8%. The Scenic Drive beyond Upper Lehman Creek Campground is closed to single vehicles or trailers longer than 24 feet. The road is open to Upper Lehman Campground year-round. The upper nine miles of the road are generally open June through October, weather depending.

Check out the Self Guided Auto Tour "Great Basin Life Zones" on the official NPS app for a journey through the unique ecosystems you'll encounter on the road to 10,000 feet!

Baker Creek Road

Baker Creek Road is a graded gravel road and is generally open May through November, weather permitting.

Strawberry, Snake, Lexington Arch Roads

Strawberry, Snake, and Lexington Arch roads conditions vary through out the year, but can be muddy or snowy in the winter and spring. High clearance vehicles are recommended for these rough, dirt roads.

The unimproved dirt road to Lexington Arch is rough and rutted. High-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended. Due to damage sustained by wildfire, the Lexington Arch road is severely washed out. Vehicles will have to park approximately 0.5 - 1 mile before the official parking area/trailhead begins as a result. Drive as far as you feel comfortable and walk the rest of the way. There is not a designated parking area. Do not block the road or damage vegetation when parking. Look for orange trail markers on trees to guide you towards the trailhead through the washout.

Note: Please drive slowly - speeding is the most common cause of accidents on these roads!

Driving Conditions

Driving conditions in the park can be hazardous. Please obey posted speed limits and use lower gears on long downhill sections to prevent overheated brakes. Seatbelts are required in both Nevada and the park. Please stop only at pullouts. Watch for pedestrians and wildlife - especially deer on the Scenic Drive and marmots on Baker Creek Road. Congestion in the visitor center parking areas can lead to accidents. Please use caution.
