Has a smell, sound, or taste ever reminded you of the past? What memories would the smell of wet wool, the crack of a musket, or the taste of coffee elicit for a Civil War soldier? On Saturday, September 1 at 7:30 PM, Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park will host an interactive campfire program, looking at the Battle of Fredericksburg through the lens of the five senses. With the help of living historians, Peter Maugle and Becky Oakes will discuss how soldiers experienced battle through sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. The program will include hands-on demonstrations, music, and audience participation.
This program is kid-friendly, and families are encouraged to attend the living history demonstrations throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday in addition to thecampfire. Find a full schedule of events on the park’s special event page.
Meet at the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center, 1013 Lafayette Blvd., 22401. The program is free, and will last around 60 minutes. Please bring a lawn chair, bug spray, and a flashlight for the return trip to your vehicle.
