SAVANNAH, GA – Fort Pulaski National Monument has received a grant from the National Park Foundation to support environmental education workshops and fishing clinics for local students during the Summer of 2024. “Take Care: Steps to Stewardship at Fort Pulaski” aims to engage students and their families, using fishing opportunities and natural education workshops as tools for learning about coastal Georgia environments.During the month of June 2024, Fort Pulaski National Monument will partner with Oatland Island Wildlife Center and Loop it Up Savannah to welcome local students to Fort Pulaski. Students will participate in natural and cultural workshops, create art around the theme of stewardship via printmaking, and learn to fish from experienced volunteer and staff anglers. Student’s family members will also receive Georgia fishing licenses, allowing families to return, fish, and learn together at their local NPS site. Superintendent Melissa Memory commented about the partnership, saying “we are very grateful to the National Park Foundation and our outstanding partners at Oatland Island and Loop it Up to enable us to offer these opportunities for members of our community to experience the park in new ways.”
Loop It Up Savannah’s Executive Director, Molly Lieberman, stated that “we are so excited to work with the team at Fort Pulaski and to receive this grant from the National Park Foundation! Our students will have an amazing opportunity to explore and experience nature in our coastal Georgia community and learn how to be good stewards of our environment as they unwind from a busy school year.” Program Coordinator Lizzy Daly added “This collaboration opened up the opportunity to intentionally integrate and explore mindfulness practices in outdoor recreational activities like fishing.”
To support the Junior Ranger Angler program, the National Park Foundation provides grants to parks, park partners, and community organizers to facilitate in-park fishing clinics, set up gear libraries, and more. The program leverages fishing as an immersive experience for children, families, and communities to gain new skills, connect with park rangers, and start building lifelong relationships with parks.
Fort Pulaski National Monument is located on U.S. Highway 80, 15 miles east of Savannah.
