 Fort Necessity National Battlefield park staff aimed to find out if Appalachian cottontail inhabited the park, so they collaborated with the Inventory and Monitoring Division to survey for their scat. It is hard to imagine any of the others commanding the respect needed to lead the Continental Army to victory over Great Britain, preside over the Constitutional Convention, and serve the United States as its first president. However, forest health monitoring in eastern National Parks has shown that park forests are rapidly changing, and don’t have enough tree regeneration to replace canopy trees as they fall or die. Tanaghrisson was an influential Seneca leader at the start of the French and Indian War. He traveled with George Washington to Fort LeBoeuf and participated in the Fight against the French as Jumonville Glen.  The Great Meadows is a wide open meadow that was used as the location for what would become Fort Necessity, and is the site of The Battle of the Great Meadows.  1 mile west of Fort Necessity is the location of General Edward Braddock's Grave. The highest ranking British officer buried on American soil, General Braddock died from wounds suffered in the 1755 Battle of the Monongahela, one year after hostilities opened between Great Britain and France at Fort Necessity. Braddock's Grave is open seasonally.
