Park Staff This area became a Union camp following the success of Smith’s attack. During the night, while both sides strengthened their positions, surrender discussions began. White flags raised over the Confederate positions at daybreak on February 16 saddened the Confederates and created joy among the Federals. Following the surrender, the Union troops camped here were given the honor of being the first to march into Fort Donelson. |
