Dispersed Camping
There is no camping inside Fossil Butte National Monument. However, dispersed camping (camping outside of a developed campground facility) is available on surrounding BLM and Forest Service lands. Ask for a map for the closest dispersed camping to the monument. For dispersed camping further away, check current conditions and use regulations with the Kemmerer Forest Service Ranger District and/or the BLM Kemmerer Field Office.

If you choose to disperse camp, please follow the following codes of conduct:

  • Practice Leave No Trace. Try to camp in a place where it looks like other people have previously camped. Avoid creating new sites.
  • If you build a campfire, use existing fire rings and make sure to clean all garbage out of the fire ring before leaving.
  • Pack-it-in and pack-it-out. Whatever you brought with you, bring it home with you when you leave, including garbage. Use Leave No Trace practices for human waste. Basically, leave the area the same or in better condition than when you arrived.
  • If you have a campfire, make sure it is dead-out before temporarily or permanently leaving the area. Bring extra water to put out the fire since most places will have no water on-site. Use water to smother the fire, and make sure to stir the pit while not forgetting to Touch and Feel the ash to ensure the fire is completely out.
  • Camp 200 feet from any water source.
  • Camping is limited to 14 days within a 30 mile radius, in a 28 day period.
Be aware that some areas of BLM and Forest Service managed lands are restricted to camping. Check current conditions and use regulations with the Kemmerer Forest Service Ranger District and/or the BLM Kemmerer Field Office.
