Join a park ranger Monday, December 23rd at 1:00pm for a program on the winter birds of the park. This family friendly program will start in the auditorium. Attendees will learn basic bird ID then make a bird feeder craft to take home. A short bird walk on the Yellow River boardwalk trail will follow the indoor program. Please come dressed for the weather and prepared to walk half a mile on an accessible trail.

Back by popular demand, Effigy Mounds National Monument will be hosting three Film Festival dates this winter, showing a series of National Park films:

Saturday January 25, 2024, 1:00-3:00pm

  • A Prophecy Fulfilled: The Cayuse & the Whitmans at Waiilatpu Knife River Indian Villages

Monday March 17, 1:00-3:00pm

  • Shadows of the Past – Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument
  • Big Thicket: America’s First National Preserve
The film festival will be held inside the auditorium of the visitor center. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch one or all the films that will be showing. There will also be light refreshments available and an intermission halfway through the event.

Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds, including some in the shape of animals. The monument is located three miles north of Marquette, Iowa, and 22 miles south of Waukon, Iowa, on HWY 76.
