High Desert Safety

Remember to stay on the trail while at Chaco Culture National Historical Park. That will greatly help in keeping you safe! All trails off of the loop road to the principal Chacoan sites (Pueblo Bonito, Pueblo del Arroyo, etc) are gravel or identified dirt paths. The backcountry trails are lined with rock cairns (stacks).

Even though our trails are short, water is a big issue in Chaco Canyon. We are also at 6200 ft of elevation, and people lose water more quickly, the higher in altitude they are.

Heat

On hot, dry, summer days, you should drink 1 quart of water per hour of hiking. Our humidity in the desert is low. You may be dehydrated and not even realize it. Drinking water before hiking can help reduce the risk of dehydration, as well as drinking during the hike (don't wait until you feel thirsty). Bring Electrolyte replacements such as salty snacks, (your body can not only suffer from lack of water, but lack of sodium electrolytes as well.)

Weather

When hiking the canyon, be prepared for heat, rain, wind, and unexpected changes in temperature. Carry a rain poncho and a jacket or sweater. Wear hiking boots and a wide-brimmed hat and use sunscreen. Carry and drink extra water. Eat lots of snacks. Take your time adjusting to the altitude and don't overdo it. Typical weather conditions throughout the year can be found by visiting the Weather page.
