After extensive repairs due to the 2022 flood, the following backcountry trails are open:
• Old Guano
• Slaughter Canyon
• Guadalupe Ridge
• Yucca Canyon
• Ussery
• Double Canyon
• Guadalupe Ridge from the west park boundary to the Slaughter Canyon Trail
Major repairs are still needed to the unpaved Walnut Canyon Desert Drive (also known as the Loop Road). Trails along this road remain closed including Rattlesnake Canyon, Juniper Ridge, and Guadalupe Ridge from the visitor center area to the Slaughter Canyon Trail junction.
Hike Smart
If you plan to hike in the park’s backcountry, the following will provide for an enjoyable and safe experience:
✅ Plan ahead and prepare.
✅ Most trails are in the wilderness and are unmarked.
✅ Pack a topographic map, compass or GPS, and know how to use them.
✅ Summer heat and winter ice or snow can be hazardous. During the summer, hike before 10 am and after 5 pm, when high temperatures and direct overhead sun are less prevalent. Expect extreme heat over 100°F (38°C).
✅ Drink water and electrolyte drinks.
✅ Eat salty snacks and carbohydrates.
✅ Use sun protection.
✅ Leave route information and a return time with a friend.
✅ Take breaks often and know your limits.
✅ Do not rely on a cell phone for assistance—reception is limited. Have a backup way of signaling for help if needed such as a whistle or signal mirror.
✅ If there is lightning, go to low-lying areas away from cliff edges, lone trees, poles, or metal objects. Become a smaller target by squatting low to the ground. Be mindful that the area is prone to flash flooding.
✅ Pack out your trash, including toilet paper.
✅ You may encounter rattlesnakes, scorpions, and centipedes. Give them plenty of space to avoid being bitten or stung.
