Operating Hours & Seasons

Visitation

The Castillo de San Marcos is open to the public seven days per week except Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November) and Christmas Day (December 25). First admission is at 9:00 a.m. and last admission is at 5:00 p.m. The Castillo closes and visitors must exit at 5:15 p.m. The park grounds are closed from midnight until 5:30 a.m.

Visitation is lowest from mid-September through mid-November. Visitation is highest around holidays (especially Christmas to New Year's); during spring, summer, and winter breaks from school; and on weekends. A busy Saturday averages 3,500 people visiting the Castillo. School group visitation is quite high October-November and February-May.

Weather and Climate

Summers can be very hot with high humidity and frequent afternoon thundershowers. Sun protection, including sunscreen, a hat, and UV protective sunglasses, is highly recommended. Be sure to drink plenty of water. Winters are generally cool to mild with occasional cold spells, especially with the wind from the north or off the water. The most temperate periods are the fall and spring seasons, when temperatures regularly hover around 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 26 degrees Celsius).

During thunderstorms, because of the danger of lightning, the gun deck will be closed to visitors. June through November is hurricane season, so be sure to check for tropical storms before visiting.
