Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What are we firing today?
A: Typically, we fire cannons, other times we fire muskets. The decision is based on volunteer attendance and staff availability. Check with the Rangers when you arrive at the park to find out what the plan is for the day.

Q: Where do the demonstrations take place?
A: Generally on the gundeck (upper level top) of the fort. The only access is the staircase in the courtyard; demonstrations may also be viewed from outside the fort along the seawall in an area accessed by a ramp. During special events, demonstrations may take place outside the fort as well.

Q: Will it be loud?
A: Yes. The cannon firing is comparable to a firework. Muskets sound similar to modern gunfire. If someone in your party has noise or other sensory sensitivities, we recommend visiting the Accessibility page on our website to read the IBCCES Sensory Guides.

Q: Why are the demonstrations canceled?
A: Usually due to weather; for the safety of staff, volunteers, and visitors, we cancel demonstrations during thunderstorms or periods of extremly high heat. Demonstrations may also be canceled due to staffing constraints.

Q: Can I shoot the cannon??
A: Only if you become a park volunteer! NPS sites across the country depend heavily on volunteers for all kinds of park services, like visitor center operations, presentations, tours, guided hikes, and even historic weapons demonstrations. The Castillo's program would not be possible without the generosity of our volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a VIP (Volunteer-In-Parks), please visit the Volunteering page on our website.
