Climate Change and the Sea Wall Improvement Project

To combat the flooding caused by rising sea level, wind, and high tides, the park is hosting the Seawall Improvement Project. This is a big project that will have many parts and will take several years to complete, but when finished it will protect park resources.

Tabby Floor Replacement

The floors you walk on during your visit to the Castillo are a protective layer of tabby, placed above the historic floors. To ensure we preserve the historic, unexcavated floors below, as well as provide a safe walking surface for our more than 700,000 annual visitors, we are in the process of replacing several of the worn floors throughout the Castillo.

What is Tabby?

Tabby is a type of concrete, created by burning oyster shells to create lime, then mixing the lime with water, sand, ash, and broken shells. This material has been a common building material in St. Augustine for more than 300 years. Our park masons are using materials and skills similar to those used centuries ago as they preserve this fortress.
