The National Park Service strives to make Cane River Creole as universally accessible as possible for everyone to enjoy. This page offers you a glance at the park's amenities and features so that you may better prepare for your visit to the park. Please be aware that due to the uniqueness of the park -- its historic setting -- some areas may be more difficult to access than others. The trails at Oakland and Magnolia Plantation are still under development and uneven surfaces and weather may affect access.

Physical / Mobility Needs

The rural character of Oakland and Magnolia makes accessibility a challenge as existing landscapes are historic and the buildings of both plantations were built before current accessibility standards were set. Extra obstacles may be encountered because of the nature of this special place.

The trails at Oakland and Magnolia are still under development. Visitors may encounter rough, muddy, and uneven trail surfaces. Visitors using wheelchairs or who have visual impairments may need assistance.

At Oakland Plantation:
The Plantation Store, Main House, and Overseer's House are equipped with chair lifts. The restrooms are accessible and located in the Pavilion near the parking lot.

At Magnolia Plantation:
The Overseer's House is equipped with a chair lift. The Cotton Gin Barn, and one Quarters Cabin have accessible ramps. The restrooms are accessible and located at the Plantation Store.

At the Texas & Pacific Railway Depot:
The depot has accessible ramps. The restrooms are accessible and located in both historic waiting rooms.
 

Deafness / Hearing Loss

Assistive Listening Devices

For interpretive ranger-led programs, ranger-led grounds tours, or for special event programs, portable Assistive Listening Devices are available. Rangers are trained in the use of this technology.

Visitors are urged to request the amplification devices by calling advance of an interpretive program 318-352-0383 x316 or emailing us . 

Blindness / Low Vision

Braille Brochure

A braille version of the park brochure can be accessed two ways:

1. Pick up a copy from the historic Oakland Plantation Store, which serves as our visitor contact station. 
2. Request a printed braille copy be mailed to you.

Tactile items can be provided upon request. Please contact us in advance so that we can plan a visit to best suit your individual needs. 

Cognitive Disabilities

Films and exhibits:

At Oakland Plantation:
There are films and oral history interviews available to watch at the Welcome Pavilion.  Inside the Quarters Cabin there is an exhibit of instruments that are tactile. Please contact us in advance so that we can plan to have more tactile objects available for your visit.

At Magnolia Plantation:
In the Overseer's House there is a film available for viewing.

At the Texas & Pacific Railway Depot:
The park orientation film is available for viewing

Noises and quite spaces:

The rural nature of Oakland and Magnolia Plantations is very quiet. However, the Oakland Main House Self Guided tour can be quite busy feeling as the hallways are narrow. 

Service Animals

Service animals are permitted in all park buildings. For a definition of a service animal, please see the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) definition. Please note that pets whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA and are not permitted inside park buildings.
