Moses Brown is one of the most important figures in America’s Industrial Revolution. His wealth and business knowledge were critical to Samuel Slater’s success. He was a key factor in the beginning of the industrial age. After retiring from the family business, he began experimenting with textile manufacturing. He partnered with his cousin Smith Brown and future son-in-law William Almy. They purchased land and water rights along the banks of the Pawtucket Falls. All their early attempts at production failed. In 1789, Moses hired an English immigrant named Samuel Slater. One year later, the experimental mill was finally a success. People, Places and Stories
