36 CFR §4.30 Bicycles

Bicycles and electric bicycles are allowed on park roads and in parking areas that are open to motor vehicle use by the public; and on the following administrative roads and trails:

  • No trails or administrative roads are open to public use.
    • Bicycles are authorized behind closed or gated sections of the Parkway motor road when it is closed to motor vehicles only.
    • Bicycles are prohibited behind closed or gated sections of the Parkway motor road when the road closure applies to all access and use of the area.
    • Residents in NPS managed housing and their guest(s) may use bicycles for access and egress to respective housing areas.
Except as specified in this Compendium, the use of an e-bike within the Blue Ridge Parkway is governed by State law, which is adopted and made a part of this Compendium. Any violation of State law adopted by this paragraph is prohibited.

Determination: Bicycles are allowed on park roads and in parking areas under 36 CFR 4.30(a).

During seasonal weather closures, the motor road can be closed to motor vehicle access but remain open to general access and use, including bicycles.

During road closures which may be for construction, storm response, high-risk maintenance operations, or other emergency or administrative action, all forms of public use and access along the motor road will be prohibited to ensure the safety of both the public and the workers present.
