36 CFR §4.11 Vehicle Load, Weight and Size Limits

(a) Gross vehicle weights shall not exceed the following:

Single/ Combination Units Gross Vehicle Weight - lbs. (kg.)
Single 3 axles 48,000 (21,800)
Single 4 or more axles 52,000 (23,600)
Combination 4 axles 62,000 (28,100)
Combination 5 or more axles 66,000 (29,600)

.
  • Permission/Permits etc. will not be authorized for vehicles/loads exceeding the established limits, UNLESS the vehicle/load is for a location such as a deed reserved road, concession facility, or Mt. Mitchell State Park. In addition, the Superintendent may further restrict or suspend hauling when the ground is saturated with water or during periods of freezing and/or thawing or for any other cause, and may, on a case-by-case basis, permit hauling of units in excess of the limits set forth above, in consultation with the Parkway Civil Engineer.
    • Limits are essential to protect the motor road and appurtenances, to protect resources, and for reasons of visitor safety.
  • The gross vehicle weight for any single or combination vehicle, regardless of the number of axles, will not exceed 50,000 lbs. for travel over the Price Lake Dam from mile marker 296.6 to 296.7 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
    • This restriction is put in place pursuant to inspection findings by Federal Highways Eastern Federal Lands and provided to the National Park Service, Blue Ridge Parkway on 11/22/21. The inspection noted that due to deterioration of the concrete piers of the Price Lake Dam Bridge that trucks exceeding 25 tons be prevented from crossing the structure until temporary shoring is installed. This restriction is based on the current condition of the structure and the potential for additional deterioration that could occur during winter weather conditions.
