Save America's Treasures Grant Projects

The Save America’s Treasures (SAT) grant program was established in 1998 and first awarded grants in 1999 to help preserve nationally significant historic properties and collections that convey our nation’s rich heritage to future generations.

Eligible properties include individually listed National Historic Landmarks or contributing properties within a National Historic Landmark district and individually listed properties in the National Register of Historic Places for national significance or contributing properties within a nationally significant National Register Historic District. Nationally significant collections are also eligible for funding, given that an application supports its national level of significance in a thorough description. Collections include artifacts, documents, sculptures and other works of art.

Since 1999, there have been more than 4,000 requests for funding totaling more than $1.54 billion.     Terra cotta repair and the Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines, Iowa. This technical repair and preservation project was supported by a Save America's Treasures grant from the National Park Service.

    The Park Inn Hotel in Mason City, Iowa is a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed hotel. Over time, the building has endured renovations that have altered its original beauty. Fortunately. the building's restoration was supported by a Save America's Treasures grant from the National Park Service.

    Christ Church Lutheran was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2009 and shortly after received a Save America's Treasures grant for masonry work to support the preservation of this Saarinen-designed building.

    About 1,400 years ago, long before Europeans explored North America, Ancestral Puebloans, sometimes called Anasazi, made their homes at Mesa Verde. For more than 600 years they and their descendants lived and flourished here, eventually building elaborate stone communities in the sheltered alcoves of the canyon walls. By about 1300 A.D. they had left their homes and moved south. Mesa Verde National Park preserves a spectacular reminder of this ancient culture.

    The World War II Facilities at Midway are recognized for the historic role they played in a crucial World War II battle in the Pacific Theater of operations. Midway is a coral atoll six miles in diameter with three islands--Sand, Eastern and Spit. The atoll's name is said to come from its location, midway between San Francisco and Tokyo.

    Located in Manhattan, New York, the USS Intrepid, the third Essex class carrier built by the United States, was laid down at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Virginia and commissioned on August 16, 1943. As early as 1910, the U.S. Navy recognized the potential value that flight would have in naval operations.

    On January 25, 1962, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) formally assigned the task of developing the Saturn V Launch Vehicle, a three-stage rocket designed for a lunar landing mission, to the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, with launch responsibility committed to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

    This complex vessel is a Civil War-era engineering marvel, far advanced for its time. H. L. Hunley, fascinates school children and historians alike, is being preserved with assistance from National Park Service grants.
