What examples of native forests and species can be found at the Park?
American Memorial Park contains a unique wetland ecosystem that represents the largest remaining mangrove forest on Saipan. This wetland complex is critical habitat for two endangered bird species, the Nightingale Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus luscinia) and the Mariana Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus guami). A candidate genus of landsnails (Partula) is also at risk.

Why was American Memorial Park established?
American Memorial Park was established to honor the United States forces that fought in the Battle of Saipan. Nine soldiers who fought in this battle were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration of the United States Armed Forces, the last of which was awarded on May 1, 2002, to Army Captain Benjamin L. Salomon by President George W. Bush.

What is the huge crab found on the island?
American Memorial Park is home to the Coconut Crab (Birgus latro), a crustacean that can grow to a whopping 12 inches across!

The Memorial Court of Honor at American Memorial Park is inscribed with 5,204 names and was dedicated on June 15, 1994, the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Saipan.

The Flame Tree (Delonix regia) received it's name because the bright orange and red blossoms which the blanket the trees every spring create the illusion that the tree is on fire.
