Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the US. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Maj. Gen. Granger, landed in Texas with news that the Civil War had ended. General Order No. 3 stated, “The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” This virtual celebration includes a libation, flowers at the reinterment area, singing, and a discussion about the importance of Juneteenth.

Pinkster Virtual Celebration
Pinkster is a religious holiday associated with the change of season to spring. Today, Pinkster is recognized as the oldest African-American holiday of the United States, celebrated since the colonial period. The African influence on Pinkster dates from the fifteenth century in the Bantu regions of Congo and Angola.
Pinkster is derived from the Dutch word “Pinksteren” which means Pentecost or the Seventh Sunday after Easter.

William Still was an active agent on the Underground Railroad and ran a safe house in Philadelphia. While doing his work for the Underground Railroad, William Still ended up meeting and helping one of his brothers who had remained enslaved when his mother escaped with his sisters. William Still recognized the importance of documenting the stories of families escaping through the Underground Railroad and eventually published a book about it. Learn more about his life story during this program.
