Historic Buildings & Bridges

Buildings and bridges make up the majority of Acadia National Park's historic structures. The National Park Service (NPS) defines 'historic' as older than 50 years old, but has a much more stringent requirements as to how it manages structures that are on the National Register Historic Places or reach other historical benchmarks.

Historic Buildings

Many of Acadia's historic buildings pre-date the park including the Carroll Homestead and multiple lighthouses. Some are associated with the early days of tourism that lead to the park's creation such as the Jordan Pond area, Sieur de Monts Spring Area and buildings associated with the park's historic campgrounds.

Grosvenor Atterbury's carriage road gatehouses and Apartment Building One on the Schoodic Peninsula remain the architectural highlights of Acadia's historic buildings. These impressive structures join other 20th century buildings built by the park for tourist use to round out the park's list of historic buildings including the Thunder Hole Ranger Station and Hulls Cove Visitor Center.

Historic Bridges

Acadia's historic bridges span streams, ocean waters, and roads. The park has various historic bridges of both stone and wood along the park's incredible network of historic trails and an impressive suite of stone faced historic bridges associated with the carriage roads and motor roads.
