Webcam Update Thursday, July 17, 2008
Well it's summer in the park for sure. Just this past week the cams have captured kayakers on Lake McDonald, tree climbers on Apgar Mountain, and lots of birds at St. Mary Visitor Center. In fact the birds have generated a number of emails wondering just what species they are. Two things come to mind right away. There are cliff swallows that nest on or near the building. When they are flying right in front of the webcam they look gigantic but are actually quite small birds. There is also an osprey nest behind the visitor center on a pole. I have seen the adults flying back and forth to the river and bringing fish back to their young. It's also possible for ravens, bald eagles, and a host of other species to end up online as they fly by. If you see any images with interesting wildlife, save it and send it in. We love seeing what you are seeing.
If you experience problems or have questions, check out the Webcam Problems link on the righthand side of the page. Answers to some questions are there and you can report problems through that link as well.

Apgar Mountain Webcam
View from Apgar Mountain The Robert Fire of 2003 heavily impacted this view. Notice the vast expanse of recovering forest. Just by the lower section of the lake you can see a finger of green surrounding the Fish Creek Campground area...one of the spots given extensive fire suppression efforts that summer. Throughout the scene the patches of green show the spotty nature of the fire and the mosaic pattern of burned and unburned forest so typical of this part of the Rocky Mountains.

Did You Know?
Did you know that male moose use almost as much energy growing their antlers yearly as female moose use being pregnant?
