Yosemite Fire Update - September 7, 2018

There are multiple fires burning in Yosemite National Park's wilderness. Wildfires, when caused by lightning, are a natural phenomenon on the landscape. While hiking trails and sitting at vistas you may see smoke in some of these areas.

Quartz Fire     

  • Discovery Date: 9/5/18     
  • Location: Quartz Mountain trail Chiquito Lake
  • Size: .1 acre                       
  • Status: Active
  • Strategy: Suppression, Confine/Contain
  • Comments: Lightning caused, suppression tactics taken in patrol status

Indian Fire     

  • Discovery Date: 9/4/18     
  • Location: Near Porcupine CG
  • Size: .1 acre                       
  • Status: Active
  • Strategy: Monitor
  • Comments: Lightning caused, no smoke showing

Half Moon Fire     

  • Discovery Date: 9/4/18     
  • Location: Ten lakes trail
  • Size: .1/4 acre                       
  • Status: Active
  • Strategy: Monitor
  • Comments: Lightning, low potential for spread. Granite and broken fuels around the fire.  

Taft Fire     

  • Discovery Date: 9/5/18     
  • Location: Glacier Point rd near Sentinel parking
  • Size: .1/4 acre                       
  • Status: Active
  • Strategy: Suppression, Confine / Contain
  • Comments: Lightning caused, near Taft Point trail.

Unicorn Fire   

  • Discovery Date: 7/28/18     
  • Location: Unicorn Peak Area, Wilderness
  • Size: 2.2 acre                       
  • Status: Active
  • Strategy: Monitor
  • Comments: Lightning strike start at 9500 feet in elevation. Moderate spread potential burning in down lodgepole and red fir. Last recon showing one log burning interior no activity seen on the fires edge. Smoke may be visible from Tuolumne
  • meadows. Did receive precipitation this week.

Merced Pass Fire     

  • Discovery Date: 8/6/18     
  • Location: Merced Pass, Wilderness, South East end of the park, 9000’
  • Size: .1/4 acre                       
  • Status: Active
  • Strategy: Suppression
  • Comments: Human caused, next to a trail.
