Yosemite Search and Rescue evacuated a hiker from the gully next to Washington Column on 7/16/2013 after three search and rescue personnel located and then spent the night with the hiker. The hiker had strayed from the trail into steep terrain, and then stopped hiking when it got dark (he didn't have a flashlight) because he couldn't proceed safely. Remember to pay attention to ensure you're on the trail and always bring a headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries (even if you don't plan on being out after dark).
