Since last Friday, July 17, there have been numerous new fire starts due to continued thunderstorms. Sunday July 20, thunderstorm activity was active park-wide including the front country and El Portal area. All storms were accompanied with rain. Other fires may be found as the weather warms and fuels dry out.
The most active fire is the Dark which was found on July 16. It is now at approximately 11 acres. Smoke impacts are minimal, but may be visible from various locations within the park. Due to fire activity the Lukens trail is closed for public safety from Tioga Rd south to Yosemite Creek Trail.
The other park fires are in the areas of White Wolf, Lukens Lake, Morrison Creek, Mt Sarr King, Lembert Dome, Yosemite Creek, Coyote Rocks, Cathedral Peak, Moraine Meadows and Rancheria Peak. All are above 8,000’. Most are showing minimal fire behavior and are creeping and smoldering through surface fuels and duff.
