The Wing Luke Museum is excited to announce Gerard Tsutakawa: Stories Shaped in Bronze. This exhibit of Gerard Tsutakawa’s public work explores the inspiration, process, and final artwork, his father George’s influence on his practice, and the effect these works have on Seattle physically, socially, and culturally, demonstrating how art imbues joy and strengthens the community.

Being raised in a Japanese heritage in the Pacific Northwest, Gerard’s design reflects a confluence of cultures and traditions. From the iconic The MITT sculpture in front of T-Mobile park to TONBI Fountain in the Amazon headquarters, he produced sculptures throughout Seattle and beyond that became integral to the cultural and social memory of many communities and families. Building on a legacy of his father’s studio and creating his own identity and style of carrying on a family tradition in public arts, Gerard has created his own notable place as a sculptor.

In this exhibit, visitors get an exclusive look into original design concepts and early drawing renderings featuring small-scale models of sculptures like the iconic The MITT and the Fountain of Wisdom with oral histories. Paired with the exhibit, visitors can also get a map for a self-guided walking tour to the Chinatown-International District and Downtown public sculptures. Submit photos with the sculptures for a chance to be featured in the exhibit.

Gerard Tsutakawa: Stories Shaped in Bronze will be on display until April 17, 2022.
