National Park Service

Occasionally, species from all around the world find a new home in the Upper Delaware Region. These species are known as nonnative species because they occur outside of their native range. Nonnative species sometimes cause no harm to the native flora and fauna, but other times can wreak havoc on ecosystems. When nonnative species hinder the survival of native species, they are called invasive species.

Invasive species usually grow, reproduce quickly, and lack the natural predators from their native range. These qualities allow invasive species to spread rapidly and often outcompete native species for resources. By displacing native plants and animals, invasive species decrease the biodiversity of an area which often affects the ecological function of that area.

While visiting the Upper Delaware River Valley, it is important to follow some simple recommendations to prevent and slow the spread of invasive species. To slow the spread of forest pests, never transport outside wood into the park, and don’t move wood throughout the park. Before and after hiking, it is important to make sure your shoes, gear, and pets are clean from seeds or plant fragments. As well, stay on marked trails to prevent introducing nonnative species into new areas. Before and after boating on the Delaware River, remember to clean off any aquatic plants, animals, or mud from watercraft, gear, paddles, ropes, or any other equipment used. Don’t forget to drain the water out of any equipment as well. Lastly, dry all equipment for at least five days or dry with a towel before reuse. If fishing, remember to dispose of any unwanted bait, fish parts, or packing materials in the trash. It is also important to remember to clean and dry your fishing gear.
