Who were the Tuskegee Airmen? The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African Americans trained and qualified to serve as military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. The term refers collectively to the pilots as well as the navigators, bombardiers, instructors, mechanics, nurses, and other support personnel who participated in the Tuskegee Experience, the Army Air Forces’ program for training African American aviation personnel between 1941 and 1946. Trained at Moton Field and Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama, they served in the United States and overseas, flying combat, escort, reconnaissance, and transport missions in the European and Mediterranean theaters while supporting the Army Air Forces’ wartime operations.
