Camping Regulations

The following are general campground regulations for the Juniper and Cottonwood Campgrounds.

Campsites

Campsite registration and fee payment must be completed within 30 minutes of occupying a campsite. Campsite occupancy is not recognized unless the required camping fee has been paid and the registration is properly posted. No person may register for a campsite with the intent of saving the site for someone else. It is prohibited for visitors to go through the campground requesting registered campers to share their campsite. Occupancy of any one site is limited to 1 family or 6 persons and 2 vehicles. Walk-in tent sites are limited to 1 vehicle. Checkout time is 12:00 Noon. Camping at all times of year is limited to 14 consecutive days. From May 1st to September 30th, camping is limited to 14 days total, whether consecutive or not. Camping is limited to a total of 30 days in a calendar year.

Sanitation

Wash dishes at your site, not in the comfort stations or at the faucets. Recreational vehicles must dispose of waste water by using either a holding tank or a catch bucket. Dumping of any waste on the ground is prohibited. A sanitary dump station is located near the entrance of Juniper Campground and in the town of Medora. Both are open seasonally (approx. May - Sept).

Campfires

Open fires are permitted only in designated campsites within the designated grills/rings or in portable fire pans capable of containing all fire ash and residue. Fires should be kept small. Fires may not be left unattended. All coals must be extinguished before leaving the site. Gathering of dead/down wood within the campground only is permitted. Firewood, regardless of the species, may only be brought into Theodore Roosevelt National Park or transported through the park if the tree from which it is derived originally stood within the state boundary of North Dakota.

Quiet Hours

Quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Picnic areas are closed to the public around this time as well (9:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.). The use of radios or audio devices in a manner that would disturb others is prohibited.

Generators

Generator hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Generators must be equipped with an effective muffler.

Pets

Pets must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet in length or otherwise physically restrained. In all campsite areas or paved surface areas, pet owners/controllers are required to immediately pick up solid waste left behind by their animals and dispose of it in toilet facilities or garbage cans. Do not leave your pet unattended. Bison and other wildlife are easily disturbed and agitated by pets.

Vehicles and Bicycles

All wheeled vehicles must remain on the paved roadways and parking pads, including trailers, motorcycles, and bicycles. The speed limit in the campground is 15 mph. All roads in the campground are one way. Roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, roller skis, or similar devices are prohibited.

Preservation and Wildlife

All plants, animals and other natural resources are protected in the park. The destruction or defacement of any feature or facility is prohibited. Do not feed, frighten, harass, or disturb bison or other wildlife.

Other Regulations

Fireworks are prohibited. The use or possession of intoxicating beverages by anyone under the age of 21 is prohibited. Horses and stock animals are not permitted in the Juniper or Cottonwood Campground.
