Travel the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor

The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor (SCNHC) stretches 320 miles from the state’s northwestern tip down through its southeastern corner near Charleston. Designated by Congress in 1996, the corridor is intended to encourage preservation of the natural and cultural resources of the area. The SCNHC has both indoor and outdoor destinations and activities for adventurers young and old.

 

In addition to historic sites associated with military history (including the Revolutionary War and Civil War), the corridor also features sites associated with Native American history, African American history, and colonial history. Travelers can also find local restaurants, shops, and museums. Explore 17 different counties of South Carolina, from the freshwater coast to the lowcountry.

 

Several sites associated with the South Carolina Heritage Corridor can be found near Charleston, including McLeod Plantation and Drayton Hall. Located within 30 minutes of one another, the two plantations are important sites for learning about the settlement of the region and the  Gullah-Geechee heritage.
