Head southeast from Old Faithful toward Craig Pass. The trailhead is east of Kepler Cascades pull-out, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) southeast of the Old Faithful overpass on the Grand Loop Road. This level trail and bicycle path follows the Firehole River to the geyser. The ride is about 4.8 miles (7.7km ) round trip. The dirt trail is best accessed by mountain bikes. Biking is not permitted beyond a barrier near the geyser.

Lone Star erupts 30–45 feet (9–14 m) about every three hours. If you witness an eruption, please note the time and report it at the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center.

Alerts: Be alert for bears and bison. Federal regulations require you to stay at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves, and at least 25 yards (23 m) away from bison and all other wild animals. Be alert and yield to hikers.

This trail follows a mostly level trail with intermittent, patchy pavement. This section could be accessed with a hand-cycle with mountain bike tires. The bike section ends about 300 ft (90m) from the geyser. The geyser is visible from where the trail ends. The trail elevation gain/loss is 240 ft (73m). Qualified service dogs are permitted but travel with dogs in Yellowstone is not without risks. Please be aware that having a service animal with you may put you at increased risk for confrontations with wolves, bears, and other wildlife.
