Thing to Do
Let's Go Canalway Questing

Have adventures in the Ohio & Erie Canalway! Put on your sleuthing hat and follow rhyming clues and a curious map to each hidden quest box. Along the way, discover the area's treasures—the natural and cultural gems of the national heritage area.
Unlike geocaching, no GPS unit is needed and no trinkets are exchanged. When you find a quest box, collect an impression of its unique stamp, sign its logbook, and put it back in place for others to discover.
Every year the questing season runs from April 15 through November 15. The Sense of Boston Quest is the only one available all year.
The number of titles varies from year to year. Sometimes quests go offline temporarily for maintenance. Visit the Ohio & Erie Canalway’s questing page for current information and to download quests. Printed quests are available at Boston Mill Visitor Center.
Each brochure includes advice on what to bring, accessibility considerations, how much time to allow, where to park, and where to begin reading the clues. Most locations are free. Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens (near the southern border of Cuyahoga Valley National Park) has an entrance fee.
The online table (Ohio & Erie Canalway – Picking the Right Quest (ohioanderiecanalway.com) lists the typical time needed to complete each quest.
Questing is fun for people of different ages. People quest solo, as couples, as a family, or in other small groups. Adults will need to read the clues aloud to younger children. There are a few quests designed especially for preschoolers.
Pets must be kept on a leash that is six feet or less on national park property. For a full list of rules, visit our pets page. Rules at other questing locations vary. Pet names and pawprints are welcome in the quest logbooks.
Refer to the online table (Ohio & Erie Canalway – Picking the Right Quest (ohioanderiecanalway.com) for the walking surfaces and other special considerations for each quest. If a quest is wheelchair accessible, has stairs, or is written at a lower reading level, that information will be listed.
