Thing to Do
Guided tours of the Garfield home

NPS
Rangers and volunteers lead visitors through the beautifully restored Victorian-era home of President and Mrs. James A. Garfield. Though only president for 200 days, James Garfield made history from the front porch of his Mentor farm during the 1880 presidential campaign by welcoming visitors (and potential voters) to his home. He engaged with them, and delivered often extemporaneous speeches from his porch. Following his assassination, Mrs. Garfield cemented his legacy by creating the first presidential memorial library. Learn how the Garfield family thrived in their Mentor home, and continued to honor their beloved husband, father and son beyond his death.
