Fort Larned Living History

Artillery demonstrations are popular during our annual living history events.

During special events, and as staffing allows the rest of the year, you can find staff and volunteers dressed in period clothing throughout the fort, offering insight into the lives of the people who lived and worked at Fort Larned in its heyday.

You might find living history characters in the infantry barracks, hospital, blacksmith shop, blockhouse, sentry post, school room, commissary, arsenal, quartermaster storehouse, issue room, officers' quarters, or marching around the fort!

Living history demonstrations include blacksmithing, historic weapons demonstrations, games, quilting and sewing, cooking, wood and leather working, baking, and more.

Each summer the staff and volunteers at Fort Larned portray different people who would have lived, and worked, at the fort.

Pets Allowed

Pets must be on a leash and accompanied at all times. They are not allowed in any of the historic buildings.

The majority of living history programs take place in the summer, especially over special event weekends such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. Outside of these timeframes you can usually find at least one person in a historic building most days of the week and on weekends.

Accessibility Information

Most of the living history demonstrations take place either in the historic buildings or on the grounds around them. Almost all of the buildings are wheelchair accessible. See our accessibility page for more information on which buildings are accessible.
