Become a Frederick Douglass NHS Junior Ranger

NPS
The NPS Junior Ranger Program is an activity based program conducted in almost all parks, and some Junior Ranger programs are national. To become a Frederick Douglass National Historic Site Junior Ranger, email DouglassNHS@nps.gov to receive a copy of the booklet. Once completed, mail your book to 1411 W Street, S.E., Washington, DC 20020 or you can email it to DouglassNHS@nps.gov. A Park Ranger will sign your certificate and mail your official Junior Ranger badge.

Becoming a Junior Ranger is easy and fun! Even if you cannot visit the site, you can still become a Junior Ranger from home. Email DouglassNHS@nps.gov for a copy of the booklet, complete at least eight activities, and mail or email the booklet back to us. We will mail you the Junior Ranger badge.

Frederick Douglass National Historic Site
Frederick Douglass spent his life fighting for justice and equality. Born into slavery in 1818, he escaped as a young man and became a leading voice in the abolitionist movement. People everywhere still find inspiration today in his tireless struggle, brilliant words, and inclusive vision of humanity. Douglass's legacy is preserved here at Cedar Hill, where he lived his last 17 years.

You can download and complete the Junior Ranger Activity Booklet at anytime and mail or email it. If you want a hardcopy of the book to complete while physically on-site, it can be retrieved at the Visitor Center, but you will only be able to do so during our normal hours of operation, which is everyday:
April 1 through October 31 - 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
November 1 through March 31 - 9:00 am to 4:30 pm
April 1 through October 31 - 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
November 1 through March 31 - 9:00 am to 4:30 pm

Service animals are allowed
A wheelchair is available for visitors to borrow while at the site and can be requested at the visitor center.
Parking Lot: There are two designated accessible spaces near the visitor center entrance. The parking lot is paved.
Visitor Center: The visitor center is a single-level building at street level. Doors at the entrance and restrooms can only be opened manually.
Historic House: The historic house is a multi-level building on top of a large hill. It is 50 feet above street level. There is a paved ramp between the visitor center / parking lot area and the top of the hill. With staff permission, you can use a personal vehicle (no larger than a 15-passenger van) to access the top of the hill. Please be advised that wheelchairs more than 27.5 inches wide will not fit through the narrowest door frame on the first floor. The second floor can only be reached by stairs, as there is no elevator inside the house. Staff can provide a photo tour of the second floor for any visitors unable to reach it.
