Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

So You Wanna Be a Paleontologist?

Students will become familiarized with fossils that have been uncovered in Florissant Fossil Beds from the Eocene and Quaternary. They will select a certain extinct species and make a sketch on a Popsicle stick canvas. After shuffling their Popsicle stick fossil, they will then hide the sticks around a room and have someone else find and "excavate" the Popsicle stick fossil and attempt to put it back together. Best done with a partner to exchange fossils to find and put together.

So You Wanna Be a Paleobotanist?

Students will re-create scientific studies done by paleobotanists analyzing data from fossil plants found at Florissant Fossil Beds to draw conclusions about the paleoclimate 34 million years ago. In this activity, students will identify fossil plant species by their leaves, review data on the growing conditions of their nearest modern plant relatives, and compare as many species as possible to determine the range of temperature and precipitation that the fossil plant community can live in.

LESSON 8: SHANGO AND DANSE CODAN

This lesson uses two songs that will emphasize the African influences on Zydeco music and the Kréyol language. The song SHANGO references an African spirit/diety that became important in the Creole and Black American community in Louisiana, especially among those who practiced the syncretic religious faith of Vodou, often popularly referred to as Voodoo.

Students will hear the song SAN MALÓ, sung by Kréyol speaker Sunpie Barnes. Sunpie has studied both Louisiana and Haitian Kréyol for over thirty years, so the accent is authentic. Students will review phrases learned in the previous HEY NOM lesson, and then use the lyrics of SAN MALÓ to learn additional phrases.

Swimming on Your Back is a National Park Service published educational book focused on the sea otters in Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska. Sea otters are the largest members of the weasel family, and lack the blubber, and consequently size, that all other warm-blooded sea animals need to stay warm. So how do they survive our cold Alaskan waters? A National Park Ranger will answer this question and engage students with photos, story time, and song.
