Six terrestrial ecosystems combine with the riparian and aquatic ecosystems of the Niobrara to create a mix of plants and animals that exist together like nowhere else. This unit focuses on the ecology and biodiversity of the Niobrara River Valley. It contains a field experience component in addition to pre and post experience classroom work.

Have you ever thought about how to power a person? We don't plug ourselves into an outlet on the wall, rather we get our energy from the food that we eat. This field trip focuses on the questions surrounding how energy is transferred throughout an ecosystem, how ecologists classify living things, and how living and non-living things interact. The field trip follows a three-touch model, where students complete activities in the classroom before and after a field trip.

Our "Wildlife" unit is broken into 16 lesson plans, each taking from 20 minutes to several class periods to complete, and targeted mainly at 4th-6th grade students. A class needn't complete every lesson in the unit, though some lessons do refer to one another and are better done in sequence. However, each lesson comes with its own set of objectives and resources.

Nature Hike: A walk on the Wilkinson Trail

Nature hikes are a great way to explore outdoor areas, and Saratoga National Historical Park’s main hiking trail, the 4+ mile Wilkinson Trail, has much to offer. Named for British mapmaker Lieutenant William Wilkinson, the trail has a shorter, 2 mile option useful with students. This activity sheet accompanies the 2-mile hike, encouraging students to look around them and engage with the natural world around them.

A Walk to Remember at Flight 93 National Memorial

This program utilizes multimedia, exhibits, oral presentations and the memorial landscape to deliver a unique learning opportunity. The overall objective of this program is to expose students to the various passengers and crew members of Flight 93: Who they were, their names, what made them unique, and how do we remember them today at the memorial. There will also be a special emphasis on the story of Flight 93 and the actions of the passengers and crew members.
