Learning from Spanish Coins

In this lesson, students learn about 18th-century Spanish currency. Teachers can use the lesson plan to help their students investigate how archeologists use artifacts like coins to come up with a relative date for an archeological site. Students will understand how archeologists use newer technologies, such as 3D modeling and Virtual Reality, in order to analyze and interpret artifacts and objects.

This unit has students reenact a tollhouse on the National Road where the students are required to calculate the toll rates charged and use coins to pay the correct toll. The students also use their math skills while participating in two different activities to calculate distances using the miles listed on the mile markers.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of the interrelationships contained in the river system by writing a descriptive essay based on an essay prompt of their choice.
