Neither Cold Nor A Harbor: Archeology and a Civil War Soldier’s Experience at the Battle of Cold Harbor

In June of 1864, the soldiers at Cold Harbor had to make use of the limited resources they had to survive. They used repurposed materials and their own hands to dig trenches and earthenwork mounds that would protect them from gunfire and mortar shells. Students will explore the issue of slavery as a major cause starting with the Missouri Compromise, The Dred Scott Decision, The Election of Lincoln, John Brown's Raid, and the numerous states secessions. Then, students become part of a regiment and complete hands-on activities as they discover the structure of an army.

Orienteering is a navigation and sport activity that incorporates walking or jogging, determining directions, and map reading.
