There is great diversity in culture, languages, history, government, and society for the twelve tribes in Montana. One animal was essential to many tribes of the Northern and Central plains, the American bison. Students will learn about the importance of the bison to American Indian tribes who hunted the bison, the variety of uses of the bison, and how the decimation of the bison herds affected the lives of the American Indians who relied on the bison.
