For thousands of years, American Indians called this area home. In 1764, French fur traders founded St. Louis on this land and later it became the grounds of Gateway Arch National Park. In this program, students visit the "Colonial St. Louis" gallery and learn about the multicultural city of St. Louis before the 1804 Louisiana Purchase. They also learn about the French merchants, Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau, and the rise of St. Louis as a commercial trading post along the Mississippi River in the era after the Louisiana Purchase.

This program can be catered to meet the needs of all K-12 groups interested in visiting. Reservations must be made at least 30 days in advance. Maximum group size is 30 students (one adult per 10 students). Please allow 50 minutes for this program and note that all programs begin at half past the hour.
