Essential Question

What role did African American soldiers have in the Revolutionary War?

Objective

Students will examine the presence of African American soldiers in the Revolutionary War.
Students will explore possible perspectives of key figures of that time.
Summarize information from a variety of sources on a Black patriot by writing a focused response to an open- ended question and participating in class discussions.

How does broadening our perspectives to include missing points of view enhance learning about history? What does analysis of the little known story of Black Patriots, like Salem Poor, reveal about the perspectives and challenges of the soldiers during the Revolutionary War? How does analysis of the little known story of Black Patriots, like Salem Poor, contribute to the body of well-known information about the Revolutionary War?


Students will be evaluated through class discussions and written activities.
