Write informative /explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly

Preparation

*(Teacher will read the story The Furry News: How to Make a Newspaper, by Loreen Leedy.
*Teacher will show short clip about writing with a quill and how letters were sent during Colonial Times.
*Students will be given the assignment to write a newspaper article about the Battle of Cowpens.)

Lesson Hook/Preview

We have been learning about the Colonial Period and the Revolutionary War. Today we are going to focus on how people wrote letters in the Colonial Era, and how George Washington would have written notes to his commanders.

Procedure

*(Teacher will read the story The Furry News: How to Make a Newspaper, by Loreen Leedy.
*Teacher will show short clip about writing with a quill and how letters were sent during Colonial Times.
*Students will be given the assignment to write a newspaper article about the Battle of Cowpens.)

Supports for Struggling Learners

Students will have instructions modeled, written, and orally given. Students will first write their newspaper article in pencil, and then on a second piece of paper they will write in quill pen. If students cannot write with the quill pen tell them you will grade the one written in pencil.
