Pollination Investigation

Grade Level:
Upper Elementary: Third Grade through Fifth Grade
Subject:
Science

With elevations ranging from roughly 3,700 to 8,700 feet, Zion National Park has a diversity of plant communities, supporting more than 1,000 species of plants. Changing elevations, temperature ranges, and varying amounts of sun and water create a mosaic of habitats within the park. The species that can be found here are influenced by nearby areas, including the Colorado Plateau, Basin and Range, and Mojave Desert.

Due to the topography and geology of Zion Canyon many different habitats are found in this park. These areas include riparian zones, deserts, and forests. Throughout all of these ecosystems flowering plants can be found, and pollinators with them. In this distance learning program, students will discover what pollination is and how important it is to all ecosystems. Looking at the relationship between plants and pollinators, participants will see how they have influenced each other and will be challenged to create their own perfect pollinator. Students will learn about Zion's flowering plants and their respective pollinators, whether it be insect or bird, and understand what a foundational role they play in the natural world.
