Essential Question
What plants are native to the battlefield, and what plants are invasive species?
Objective
As a result of this lesson plan, students will be able to identify plants native to the battlefield and recognize invasive species to the park.
Background
As the National Park Service purchases land from private owners to preserve historic sites and educate the public, there are a number of species that have infiltrated the battlefield. There are over 538 species of plants and 151 of those at Cowpens are invasive. In an effort to restore the battlefield back to its 18th century appearance, study and removal of the invasive species is important. There are several restoration efforts including mechanical, manual, and clearing with fire.
Preparation
Teacher will gather sites that support the research of this lesson and make available to students.
