3.Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems

3-LS4-3. Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

What happens to marine animals when the tide goes out? Learn about the challenges that these animals face at low tide and how their adaptations help them to survive.

Length: 1 hour

Theme:

The unique location of the Acadian archipelago at the interface between ocean and land, temperate and boreal provides for diverse, dynamic ecosystems where people and nature are intricately linked by the need to coexist and to adapt to changing conditions.

Goals:

To introduce the students to the adaptations of life in the tidepools, to give them an understanding of how data collection is an important scientific tool, and to connect them to the resources of Acadia National Park on emotional and scientific levels.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Describe how tides affect the intertidal habitat.

  • Describe the challenges that intertidal organisms must face.

  • List adaptations of tidepool creatures for survival in their environment.
