In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Corps of Discovery Expedition to explore and map newly aquired territories west of the Mississippi River. These lands had been purchased from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase. From 1803 to 1806, the Corps of Discovery was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who worked with a team of explorers and York, an African American man enslaved by Clark. In addition to mapping out a new trail to the Pacific, the expedition conducted scientific experiments and established trade relationships with various Native American tribes along the way, who were central to ensuring safe passage to and from the Pacific for the Corps of Discovery. The three-year voyage started and ended in St. Louis.

In this field trip, students will explore the cultures, landscapes, and animals encountered by the Corps of Discovery as the traveled and mapped the newly purchased Louisiana Territory. They will also learn about the lives of Lewis and Clark and the people they interacted with during the voyage.
