Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine is a 43-acre park situated on the outer harbor of Baltimore City. It is best known for its role in the War of 1812 and the battle which inspired the writing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” but its role in the defense of Baltimore spans several generations from 1802 to 1945. This activity will use informational signage to guide students through different eras of the fort’s history as they learn about different stories and resources. It provides teachers with a structured visit while ensuring their students get the most out of their trip.
Learning Objectives
Though this in-park activity students will be able to:
- describe the form and functions of historic structures.
- explain different uses for Fort McHenry during its time as an active military installation
- describe how differences between the daily lives of officers and enlisted men illustrate differences is social and economic status
- explain the strategic significance of Fort McHenry’s location in Baltimore’s harbor
- identify different ways of memorializing historic events
