Where the Water Begins

“Where the Water Begins” is an interactive science program to understand the thermal water cycle of Hot Springs National Park. It involves several demonstrations to illustrate the geology of the Ouachita Mountains, the water cycle, the potential impact of pollution in the Hot Springs recharge zone, and hot springs ecology. The program also involves larger field activities to integrate the messages of the hot springs water cycle and the protection of the recharge zone.

Fun Fact: Did you know the "Hot Springs Recharge Zone" is a ~16 square mile region much larger than the boundary of the park?

Program Length and Grade Range

This program is adaptable to classroom presentations, large multi-class events, and large public events and targeted towards families with children k-6. It lasts 1 to 1.5 hours.

Program Logistics

This program is not place-based.
In schools, groups can be up to 30 students per ranger. For larger school groups, teachers should expect to assist with table activities.
For larger events, groups can be up to 45 people per ranger. Parents and guardians are encouraged to attend.
